The tragedy doesn't end there, as after Arlong discovers Nami's talent for drawing maps he make hers into a slave for his crew, forced to draw maps in order to chart their conquest for the Grand Line. Although they were not related by blood, there was no doubt they were still family, and so Arlong executes the woman by gunshot in one of the most tragic moments in One Piece's entire history. However, given their impoverished life, Bell-mere only has 100,000 beli, so in a heartbreaking moment of love and sacrifice, she uses the money to pay for her daughter's lives, guaranteeing their safety, but forfeiting her own life to the pirate Arlong. Upon arriving at Cocoyashi Village, Arlong demands every family pays 50,000 beli for every child and 100,000 beli for every adult in order to live. The aspect of her personality that is most apparent is the love she has for Nami and Nojiko, which is displayed in her final moments. When Arlong and his crew first make their way towards Bell-mere's house, she actually manages to get the jump on the Fishman with her rifle. Bell-mere is kind and compassionate towards others, but fierce and unflinching towards the people who mean to do her family harm. This strong woman had a hugely positive effect on Nami. If there are any doubts about how bad a person Arlong is, those doubts are gone by the reveal of the tragedy he brought upon the decimated village of Gosa. He rules the Conomi Islands with an iron fist, controlling the population with fear and bleeding them dry of their money and weapons. As a Fishman, he believes he and his crew are genetically superior to humans with their superior strength and ability to breathe on land and water, therefore, humanity must serve and bow before their power and might.
He is imposingly tall with long erratic hair, sharp teeth and a terrifying shark-like glare. Arlong is set up as a horrifying monster in both design and personality.
